The first inhabitants arrived on the island in 500 BC from the northwest Africa, were of Berber and called themselves "Mahos" and its island "Thyterogakat" (La Quemada).

In the first third of the fourteenth century the island became Lanceloto Malocello Genoese navigator.

Since then renamed "Insula of Lançarotus Marocelus" and then "Lanzarote".

In the early fifteenth century it was conquered by Jean de Bethencourt to the crown of Castile.
